Awaken Your Taste Buds for National Nutrition Month

by Barbara Rossini, Vice President of Community Relations, Summit Health

SH_NutritionWhen people think of Summit Health, they often think of our network of primary care practices, hospitals, and specialty offices; the places you turn to and trust when you or your loved ones are sick or experiencing an emergency.

A misconception regarding healthcare, however, is that you only use it when you become sick with a short-term illness or chronic disease. That’s a myth. A big myth we’re working hard to change because Summit Health is here for community members when you are well, too.

As part of our mission to provide high-quality, affordable, accessible healthcare, we want to help guide you on your paths to good health. At the beginning of this month, we kicked off a month-long “Awaken Your Taste Buds” campaign to promote nutritional literacy. The campaign was created in response to our 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment data that outlined nutrition and lack of adequate vegetable consumption as a critical problem among Franklin County residents. Poor nutrition is linked to chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

People are often confused about what it really means to be healthy, and more specifically, what to eat to maintain great nutrition and lower the risk for chronic disease. Throughout March, Summit Health will offer a number of free opportunities to help educate fellow community members on the basics of nutrition:

Community Cooking Demonstrations
5:30 p.m. | Wednesday, March 9, and Tuesday, March 15
Chambersburg Hospital Lecture Center, 112 N. Seventh St., Chambersburg
You may not learn the knife skills required to make you a formidable contender in a culinary contest, but you will learn simple, applicable tips to help you create healthy, budget-friendly meals. Led by Chambersburg Hospital Executive Chef Emilie Brossene and Director of Food and Nutrition and Registered Dietitian Julie Charnosky. Demos based on recipes found in the cookbook Good and Cheap: Eat Well on Just $4/Day.

Kids’ Grocery Store Tour
6 to 8 p.m. | Wednesday, March 30
Giant Food Store, 925 Norland Ave., Chambersburg
A fun grocery store that will equip school-aged children and their parents with shopping savvy! Kids will learn about eating all the colors of the rainbow; how to identify healthy “snack attacks;” and play grocery store “I Spy.”

March
How well are you really eating? Get a free nutritional assessment from a registered dietitian with Summit Endocrinology.

Not sure you can make one of the events and want some tips for healthful eating from our Summit Health dietitians?
  • Eat a variety of colorful vegetables
  • Eat whole fruit instead of juice, sugary beverages or desserts
  • Eat whole grains: bread, cereals, oats, quinoa, farro
  • Eat low-fat dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese
  • Eat a variety of protein: fish and seafood, lean meat, chicken, eggs, fortified soy products, beans, nuts, seeds
  • Use healthy oils: olive, canola, sunflower
  • Limit: saturated and trans fats, added sugars, excess sodium
When we eat nutrient-dense foods like the ones listed above, our bodies feel better and function better because these are the foods intended to fuel them. These are the foods that can help you maintain good health and limit risk for diabetes and other chronic diseases.

For more information on this campaign or to register for one of the events, visit: www.SummitHealth.org/NutritionMonth.
