Free and Fun in Downtown Chambersburg

by Laiton Suders, intern, Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce

moviesOn a beautiful summer Saturday evening staying inside seems like a waste of gorgeous weather, but going out always costs more money than you’d prefer to spend. So, what’s a reasonable Chambersburg family to do? You put in a long, hard week of work and you deserve to unwind without breaking your bank.

Never fear, we have the perfect solution: Second Saturdays.

Every second Saturday of the month from June through September, Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) organizes an outdoor concert and movie showing at Chambers Fort Park (the park behind Main Street Deli at the confluence of the Falling Spring and Conococheague Creeks).

And it is absolutely free.

At 5 p.m.., relax and enjoy opening acts such as Jon Ingels and Carly Clark. Then, get ready for our favorite local bands including Wings That Buzz and the NAS Trio. At sundown, gather your family for an outdoor theater-style showing of a family-friendly movie such as  “Zootopia” or “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.” With entertainment appropriate for kids and amusing for adults, Second Saturday has something for everyone in your family.

The next Second Saturday will kick off ChambersFest week on July 9. It will feature Wings That Buzz with opener Jon Ingels, followed by the film “Back to the Future” (1985). You won’t want to miss it!

If your busy schedule keeps you away this month, here’s the full Second Saturday schedule for the rest of the year:

July 9
Concert - Wings That Buzz with opener Jon Ingels
Movie - Back to the Future - PG (1985)

August 13
Concert - Shawan and The Wonton with opener Carly Clark
Movie - Zootopia - PG (2016)

September 10
Concert - NAS trio performance with opener Waylon K. Smith
Movie - Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens - PG13 (2015)

Second Saturday Concerts in the Park are sponsored by Volvo Construction Equipment and the Downtown Summer Movie Series is sponsored by Summit Health.

Chambersburg Community Mural Project

Appeal from Noel Purdy, President of Downtown Chambersburg Inc.

We’ve reached a critical moment to inspire and build our community through public art, and we need your help!

Downtown Chambersburg, Inc. (DCI) has partnered with local public art enthusiasts to bring Isaiah Zagar to Chambersburg this summer. Zagar, a renowned Philadelpha-based mosaic-mural artist, will work with community volunteers to install two large-scale murals on Main Street.

We’ve launched a fundraising campaign to raise $20,000 to pay for the murals. Patriot Federal Credit Union is providing a $5,000 community challenge grant for the gofundme campaign. For every dollar donated on the gofundme website, Patriot will match it dollar for dollar up to $5,000.  Our community has donated $4,500 already; help us exceed our $5,000 goal and donate here.

Work has already started prepping the project sites on Main Street. The mural on the Main Street Deli building (33 N. Main Street) will be approximately 68 feet wide by 15 feet high, and the mural on The Foundry building (100 S. Main Street) will be approximately 37 feet wide by 15 feet high.

Holly Baker Strayer, an art teacher at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, has taught her art students about Zagar and his work transforming Philadelphia’s neighborhoods for years. Strayer invited Zagar to come to Chambersburg to do a mural, and he agreed. She has partnered with us to bring Zagar to Chambersburg and brighten downtown with his art.

Public art has been used to help revitalize downtowns and to improve the look and feel of downtowns. DCI has been working to expand its existing downtown mural project, a temporary mural exhibit that features 80+ murals, to include permanent murals. DCI hopes that the Zagar community mural project will be the catalyst for an ongoing permanent mural project in the downtown.

Our opportunity to improve downtown as a community has arrived. Please donate and show your support.

Thank you!

Noel Purdy, Downtown Chambersburg Inc.
