Chambersburg Winter Wonderland: Part 3

IceFest slide logoMy first two posts were all about the fun winter activities we have in this beautiful town during the holiday season: Small Business Saturday, The Christmas Parade, Cocoa Crawl and Capitol Theatre holiday movies and shows. I think the best way to end this Winter Wonderland trilogy is with the popular regional festival, IceFest, which showcases 70+ ice sculptures.

This is one HUGE festival that nearly everyone in the Chambersburg area is aware of - and it just gets bigger and better each year. This year is no exception, with more than 20 events happening during the four-day festival from January 28-31. Some of this year’s highlights are detailed below.

What’s an ice festival without ice?

IceFest SnowmenThere will be over 70 beautiful, professional ice sculptures lining Main Street you just have to see for yourself in person. Live ice carvings for some of the larger sculptures will take place Thursday and Friday evenings.

There is the one ice sculpture in particular that always gets people talking: the Double-wide Ice Slide. This sculpture has two lanes so you can race your friends down the slide and enjoy some friendly competition…or not. It doesn’t cost a penny and is fun for the whole family.

The Ice Slide, located in the Capitol Parking Lot next to Gartenberg Jewelry, will be open:
Thursday-Friday: 5-8 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
Sunday: 12-4 p.m.

Dancing in a winter wonderland…

IceFest will feature the 7th Annual Snowfall Ball on Friday, January 29 at Central Presbyterian Church, a chance for you to get out your dancing shoes and hit the dance floor! All levels of dancers are welcome from beginners to professionals. To start the night, Frank Hancock will lead a dance workshop on two of the most enjoyable dances, the Cha Cha and the Foxtrot.

As soon as the clock strikes 7 p.m. open dance will begin. I heard there is even going to be a special spotlight dance around 8:30 p.m. I’m sure you won’t want to miss it! Tickets are sold at the door for $10 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Chili Cookoff Facebook HeaderA fun-filled Saturday for all!

Pancake Breakfast, Icing on the Cake, Chili Cook-off, Polar Dunk Plunge, Live Glass Blowing, Frozen Flicks…these are just a few of the many events happening throughout the day on Saturday, January 30! As you can see from the list, Saturday is going to be nothing but fun and delicious.

To start off the day, at 10 a.m. you can purchase a ticket for $1 to see the array of creative cakes decorated by professionals, amateurs and students for Icing on the Cake at the Capitol Theatre. The theme this year is super heroes and I can guarantee there is going to be some “super” cool cakes there. You can even come back from 4-5 p.m. to eat the delicious cake.

After viewing cakes, move on to warm up at the Chili Cook-off in the big heated tent at the North Square Market parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For just $5 to enter, you’ll watch amateur and professional cookers battle it out for the best chili in the region - and you can taste their creations. For those crazy souls out there who think they can handle the heat (literally), sign up for the hot pepper eating contest and you could win $100.

To end the day, anyone and everyone is welcome to sit with their family and friends under the big heated tent at the North Square Market parking lot for Frozen Flicks to watch The Avengers. Popcorn, candy, and soda will be at your convenience for $1 a piece, but the event itself is FREE.

Run Your Ice Off

Ready, set, go! What is the perfect way to end the perfect weekend? With a 5K! The race will begin on Sunday the 31st at 1:30 p.m. and cost $25 to register. There will be cash prizes for the first female and male finisher and awards for the top three runners for men and women in each age division. There is also going to a Kids’ Fun Zone from 12-2 p.m. and a scavenger hunt for kids. So get out there and have some fun! Who knows, you might even win some money…

Thanks for following along with my three blogs! I truly hope you took advantage of all the fun activities available in our Chambersburg Winter Wonderland.
